TAC Psychology Services in Melbourne
A transport accident can have a significant impact on your life, affecting not only your physical health but also your emotional wellbeing. Whether you've been involved in a car accident, motorcycle accident, cycling accident, public transport incident, or have been injured as a pedestrian, the psychological effects can often continue long after physical injuries begin to heal.
In Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) can fund psychological treatment for people who have been injured in transport accidents, helping them access the support they need to recover and move forward. This may include support for both psychological injuries and the emotional impact of physical injuries sustained during an accident.
Individuals can access 6 fully funded sessions within the first 90 days post-accident, as long as they have a referral from their GP specifying psychological treatment is required following a transport related accident. We can then submit a request to TAC for additional funding if required.
The TAC recognises that recovery is about more than physical rehabilitation. Many people experience emotional and psychological challenges following an accident, including:
Anxiety or panic when travelling
Fear of driving or returning to the road
Post-traumatic stress symptoms
Depression or low mood
Stress and adjustment difficulties
Chronic pain-related distress
Changes in confidence, independence, or identity
Sleep difficulties and heightened vigilance
Grief and loss following serious injury or lifestyle changes
Every person's experience is different. Some people seek support immediately after an accident, while others find that symptoms develop weeks or even months later.
A psychologist can help you:
Process the Trauma | Many people experience intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, or ongoing fear following an accident. Evidence-based therapies can help individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce the impact they have on daily life.
Manage Anxiety and Fear | It's common to feel nervous about driving, being a passenger, or travelling near the location where an accident occurred. Psychological support can help rebuild confidence and gradually reduce avoidance behaviours.
Adjust to Injury and Recovery | Serious injuries can affect employment, relationships, independence, hobbies, and future plans. Therapy can help individuals navigate these changes and adapt to new circumstances.
Cope with Persistent Pain | Research shows that physical pain and psychological wellbeing are closely connected. Psychological interventions can help people manage the emotional impact of chronic pain and improve overall quality of life.
Support Return to Work and Daily Activities | For many people, returning to work, study, parenting responsibilities, sport, or social activities is an important part of recovery. Psychologists can assist with goal setting, confidence building, and overcoming barriers to participation.
The TAC may fund psychological treatment when it is related to injuries sustained in a transport accident. In many cases, the first six psychology sessions can be accessed without prior TAC approval, provided they are recommended as part of your accident-related treatment. Additional sessions may be approved through a Mental Health Treatment Plan submitted by your treating psychologist.
