FAQ’s about the Autism Assessment Process
Seeking an Autism Assessment can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to have questions about what the process involves. At Graham Psychology, our goal is to make the experience clear, supportive, and respectful of your individual story. We provide thorough, evidence-based Autism Assessments that look beyond surface symptoms, taking time to understand developmental history, cognitive patterns, emotional wellbeing, environment, and lived experiences. Read on to understand each stage of the process so you know exactly what to expect and can move forward with confidence.
Why Consider an Autism Assessment?
Many children, teenagers, and adults seek an autism assessment to better understand lifelong differences in communication, sensory experiences, social interaction, routines, emotional regulation, or executive functioning.
An assessment can help provide:
Greater self-understanding
Clarity around challenges and strengths
Recommendations for school, work, or daily life
Access to supports and accommodations
Validation of long-standing experiences
Whether you are exploring concerns for yourself or a loved one, an Autism Assessment can be an empowering step.
How long does an assessment take?
At Graham Psychology, we use a structured and compassionate process designed to provide meaningful answers.
Our assessment process is across 4 appointments. An initial intake appointment where we get to know you, two appointments for the assessment, followed by a feedback session. The feedback session will be booked 4-6 weeks after the assessment session, where a report will be provided and the clinician will explain all results.
Who can be assessed for Autism?
Autism can present differently across life stages. We provide assessments for:
Children | Parents might have concerns regarding their child’s social development, communication, emotional regulation, or sensory differences.
Teenagers | Teenagers may experience masking, anxiety, school stress, identity questions, and friendship challenges.
Adults | Many adults seek assessment later in life after years of feeling different, overwhelmed, misunderstood, or recognising traits in themselves or family members.
What accomodations can I access during the assessment process?
You can eat, drink, move, sit however is most comfortable. You may fidget, stim and change seating positions. You are free to do what you need. In clinic, we can adjust the lighting and sensory tools are available, or you can bring your favourites!
Depending on which clinic you are visiting, we can advise of a low-stimulation route to accessing our practice.
How much does an Autism Assessment cost?
Autism Assessment includes both the use of an Autism Assessment tool such as ADOS-2, MIGDAS-2 or ADI-R as well as a Cognitive Assessment (either a WISC-V, WPPSI-IV, WAIS-IV depending on age).
The cost is inclusive of the 4 appointments and time required to produce the report.
Autism Assessment + Cognitive Assessment = $3300
A Neuroaffirming and Respectful Approach
We understand that autism is not something to be “fixed.” Our role is to provide clarity, understanding, and practical recommendations that honour neurodiversity and individual differences.
We aim for every client to feel seen, heard and respected throughout the process.
